Twitch Introduces New Policy to Combat Unlicensed Gambling

On October 18, Twitch will implement a new policy that prohibits unlicensed gambling live streams on its platform. The move is an effort by the streaming service to protect its users from predatory behavior and scams. This announcement comes after months of controversy surrounding the issue of gambling on Twitch.

No More Unlicensed Gambling Live Streams

In the past few years, online gambling has become increasingly popular, with many people opting to stream their sessions on platforms like Twitch. While some do it for fun, others see it as a way to make money.

However, due to the recent controversy, the Amazon-owned live streaming platform now bans the streaming with unlicensed gaming platforms including certain crypto gambling websites. The prohibition will cover those sites that are not licensed in the US or other jurisdictions that have sufficient regulations to protect consumers.

Stake.com, Rollbit.com, and Duelbits.com are the ones mentioned in the statement but Twitch indicated that they “may identify others as we move forward.”

The upcoming update will not cover the sports betting category nor the fantasy sports like football or poker.

Gambling Controversies on Twitch

This comes after several streamers threatened to stop streaming using the platform if the streaming with illegal gambling sites is not addressed. This is because some of the popular gambling categories like slots and roulette are being dominated by streamers with unregulated platforms which may have a negative impact not just on the industry, but also to the younger viewers.

“Gambling content on Twitch has been a big topic of discussion in the community, and something we’ve been actively reviewing since our last policy update in this area,” according to the statement.

“While we prohibit sharing links or referral codes to all sites that include slots, roulette, or dice games, we’ve seen some people circumvent those rules and expose our community to potential harm.”
